Selecting a College; A Few Simple Steps

by Daniel Kane

College admission is, in its simplest form, a numbers game. In fact, while some would call it a kind of lottery, lotteries offer almost no chance of success to those who participate in them, while quite the opposite is true of college admission. There are nearly 3,500 colleges and universities in the United States (counting two and four year institutions) so students have no shortage of options. So, students who do a little research and a bit of thinking about what kind of educational environment best suits them should not have a problem landing at a college or university in which he or she is likely to be happy and academically successful. Believe it or not, students who start their college search early, make good use of the college and financial aid information available in college guides and websites, and ultimately apply to at least four or five carefully chosen colleges can sail through the process with little or no anxiety or hassle. Despite the media’s preoccupation with how tough it is to get admitted to the Harvard’s, Yale’s, and Princeton’s of the world, a very small number of colleges deny admission to nearly as many students as they admit. Thus, if you do not have the grades, SAT scores and desire to attend a very highly selective college and you have applied to a realistic set of colleges your chances at each are high. On the other hand, if your grades and test scores put you in the top five percent and you are applying to the highly selective few, just be sure to also apply to a few of the hundreds of great schools that are not quite as selective.

A few colleges and universities, places like Harvard, Stanford, and MIT, receive so many applications from top students that they can be incredibly selective, admitting just fifteen percent of their applicants (sometimes fewer). But, many good colleges, some with pretty high profiles, admit forty to sixty percents. And, nationally, the acceptance rate is close to seventy-five percent (75%).

Remembering these statistics, you are ready to begin the process of selecting and gaining admission to a college. Look for and find six to eight colleges which offer the major(s) of greatest interest to you, are likely to admit students with your grades and scores, and provide the campus lifestyle and environment you seek. Start by meeting with your college counselor to:

1. ask for his/her college recommendations.

2. be sure you are scheduled to take the right high school courses.

3. sign up for the SAT and ACT.

4. find out which colleges will be visiting your school, and when.

5. sign up for the college fairs being held in your area.

Remember, the internet is a great source of information. Select keywords like “colleges”, “universities”, “scholarships”, etc.

Once you’ve completed the above steps, you are well on your way. It doesn’t have to difficult.

Why are Record Numbers of Adults Enrolling in College?

by Daniel Z. Kane

There are now far more adults pursuing college and graduate school degrees than ever in history.

The factors responsible for this growing trend are readily identifiable. The most obvious is that the tremendous growth of online education has made it possible…even easy…for adults to schedule their academic responsibilities around the other demands on their time.

Next, it is now easier than ever for adults to qualify for financial aid, especially for online education. Twenty years ago, almost no aid was available to students enrolled in online degree programs or distance education.

Another factor responsible for the growing number of adults returning to higher education is the greatly increased acceptance of online degrees. Several recent surveys have found that employers are more likely than in past years to view an online degree as being valuable.

Just as online college programs are now frequently accepted as being equivalent to traditional, campus-based degrees, the awarding of college credit for life experience has enjoyed increasing acceptance in recent years. As a result, time-to-degree has been reduced for many adults. So has the cost.

And, it’s not just online colleges that are enrolling more adults. Traditional colleges are growing by making it possible for working adults to earn a degree by attending evening and/or weekend classes.

Convenience, the availability of scholarships and financial aid, the growth of online education, and other factors have been major contributors to the huge growth of adult higher education. But, most adults currently enrolled in degree programs will tell you the primary reason for their return to school is to acquire the skills and credentials necessary for career advancement.

Whatever your reason(s) for considering a return to school, be aware that you are living in a world where there are far more good educational options available to adults than ever before.

Online Degrees: Technology Meets Education in the real world

by Dr. Thomas Slater

You see advertisements for them every day: “Get your online bachelors degree at your convenience and get a better job.” And in fact, if done right, an online education can provide you just the degree you need, without having to significantly change your life to make room for a class schedule. This is because you can take classes online at your convenience, at night, or whenever you can schedule some free time. This makes it much easier to hold down a full-time job, take care of your children, or any other number of things you would have to arrange if you were to go back to school full time on a traditional campus.

However, there are some drawbacks to an online training. First of all, you have to make sure that your school is accredited. Most employers will not honor degrees that have been gotten from schools (online or traditional) without accreditation. Because online education (also called “distance learning”) is gaining in popularity and in recognition as a legitimate education means, more and more organizations are now giving online schools accreditation, so that a degree you earn from an online university is every bit as good as one you earn in a traditional campus.

However, this isn’t always so, and you have to make sure that it is true before you waste your hard-earned assets on an online associates degree. How do you determine whether or not a university is accredited? Check the regional accreditation board in the area where your particular university is physically located. If it has not been recognized by this accreditation board, it’s not legitimate at least in regard to what sort of certification or degree it will offer you, and you should look elsewhere.

Once you do find an accredited degree program that has the training you want, you can apply for financial aid to actually “attend” classes there. It used to be true that for students to qualify for financial aid, you had to complete at least 50% of your education on a traditional campus. This is no longer true, however, and the school itself should be able to help you apply for financial assistance much in the way a traditional university can.

Finally, online colleges have one step backward over traditional schools, and that is that you do not have to physically show up for classes. Yes, this is an advantage in terms of your time, but it also means that you have to be completely self-accountable for your own “attendance” and completion of work. Therefore, if you’re not self-motivated enough to make sure you complete your work on time and follow the syllabus ver batim, an online degree program is probably not for you.

If you are conditioned and have no problem with self-motivation, then an online degree program may be just the ticket. You should be able to complete your associates degree with much less inconvenience, and without having to significantly disrupt your life. This, in turn, can help you find that dream job you’ve been looking for all your life.

The Easiest Way To Online Adult Education

by Don Pedro

Though many matured people are interested in adult education, the main problem for them is that they hardly have the time to attend the classes. This is traceable to the busy schedule they keep in their various offices. If they enroll for any of the program, it is certain that there will not be time to attend to the assignments given and consequently the entire programme won’t be completed on time.

But it becomes a new case entirely when the classes are done via the world wide web. The online adult education is the internet version of the physical adult education. In the former, you attend all your classes online, in the comfort of your room or office while the latter entails you attending the classes in person.Though many people out there still remark that the online version is nothing to be compared to the traditional version. The appropriate question to ask therefore is whether there is enough time for you to attend the classes in person.

Many colleges and universities in existence today are now offering adult education via the internet. The only qualification you need is that you are matured, engaged in a career and obviously can read and write. Their requirements are not scary as those required when you want to get a bachelor or master degree certificate.

Also, I urge you to stay away from all those mails in your Inbox talking about online adult education. My investigation has shown that genuine online institutions don’t send out unsolicited mails to millions of people. I advise you to delete them anytime you see them in your box. This is the action I normally take as I know they are not genuine. You are only sent the mail if you had requested for it on their website.

It is through searching the internet that you can get reputable online institutions offering adult education.Patiently go through some of the returned pages. What you should be concerned with is the accreditation status of the institutions. Stay away from all those institutions that is not accredited.

Furthermore, I will advise you to run away from any institutions offering you free online adult education certificates. These type of institutions are not there to help you.You will never gain anything by getting free certificates. Most employers of labor know one or two things about these fake institutions. They know which prospective employee is having the right certificate. So, it is advisable to run away from free certificates.
